Homeland
By Timo Schmitz

Chechnya, my beautiful land,
Strong people, strong land,
You are the ruler of the Caucasus,
My heart is rejoicing!
We in Europe are missing you,
Chechnya, you were ours,
Chechens are everywhere in the world,
The sun always shines brightly,
Chechnya, where are you my love?

[Poem] Timo Schmitz: “Свобода” (Freedom) – Russian with English translation – 2017

English Translation:

Freedom
By Timo Schmitz

I remember you, it’s long ago,
But today I know, you are far away,
The mountains are full of grief,
Now the dead are sleeping there,
Every night I hear their cry,
Every night I hear their death rattle,
I dream that I can live,
where children smile; maybe,
where I do not need to forget who I am –
Freedom, I love you!

[Poem] Timo Schmitz: “The Chechen Wars” (Чеченские войны) – Russian with English translation – 2017

The Chechen Wars
By Timo Schmitz

Blood runs through the streets of Samashki,
Blood runs through the home’s eyes,
Bombed is every home in Grozny,
Chechen cildren are screaming in the morning.

Mountaineer, know, that we won’t forget,
Your strong resistance of your borderland,
Mass graves in Achkhoy-Martan,
Thirst of Khankala,
Shadow of Gudermes,
Where are you, darling? Where do you sleep?

[Poem] Timo Schmitz: “Чечня” (Russian with English translation) – 2017

Chechnya
By Timo Schmitz

The country of old traditions,
The country which is the paradise on earth,
The center of the Caucasus alluring freedom,
The stronghold of resistance,
Of a courageous generation,
Freedom or death! [the motto of Chechnya]
On the top of the mountains where the mountaineers live,
And death smells from the mountains of Bamut,
Gate to the treasures of Sharoy,
Tears like rivers in Kharsenoy,
The girl from Shali cries in January,
The smell of smoke on the boulevard,
Mansur, the great hero, was here,
The district of Vedeno is the heart of this land,
Dzhokhar died in Gekhi-Chu,
We will never forget the times of war,
Chechnya, come back, please,
My soul is this mountaineous land!

In 2014, Ana Lily Amirpour’s “A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night” stormed the cinemas, chaining the viewer to a multi-dimensional plot, filled with breath-taking images and music. One important core aspect of the whole film is the meaning of life and death. The film gives a lot of food for thought about life in general and the meaning of life. Though caught in a scene of despair and decay, there is still hope: the force of love – pure, true love.

English:

My delightful Chechnya
By Timo Schmitz

The mountains are huge,
a girl sells stuff in a village,
the roads are very long,
a Russian soldier drinks alcohol,
a Chechen wolf is powerful,
a sheep gives its wool,
the field maple blossoms every year.

The Chechens fought the Russians,
The wolf killed the swine,
Nowadays there are no more glorious women and glorious men who do not believe,
Stand up! Stand up, you peaceful
my delightful Chechnya!

Timo Schmitz: “Poetry about the Vaynakh deportation on 23 February 1944” (2017) [PDF]

On 23 February 1944, Stalin started to deport the whole Chechen and Ingush nation to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan within 2 weeks. Although they lived 13 years in exile, they did not accept assimilation and kept their traditions and values, aad when they returned they continued to live like before. However, the Vaynakh deportation is probably the darkest chapter of contemporary history of Chechnya and Ingushetia, as well as one of the most inhuman acts under Stalinism, and thus an important theme for literature. In this article, I analyse three poems and the way they deal with the deportation.
